@justtracyjustcause: 1996–1998 — University of Regina Lest I leave you thinking it was just Renison, let me assure you: it was not. I’ve had similar adventures almost everywhere I’ve worked since graduating. Fair is fair—everyone gets a turn. I arrived in Regina during the scorching summer of 1996 with my nine-year-old niece, Ally, in a ’68 Pontiac without air conditioning. She felt like crying, so I told her to go ahead. The next day, I returned to our hotel room and found her propped on the bed, surrounded by nearly every room-service dish on the menu, just chillin’ with an ice-cream sundae. At first, I was amused. Then I got the Visa bill. 🤦😭 I had been hired to teach capitalism, industrialization, political economic theory, social statistics and research methods—five courses per term. My salary was $44,000, my student loans accumulated interest at 12 percent, and I lived on chili and ramen noodles while renting my furniture for $110 a month. The graduate students found the professor with rented furniture endlessly amusing. I was happy to amuse them for a minute. 😊 Yet Regina gave me some of the best students I ever taught: polite, grounded, conscientious and remarkably well-read. During my first final exam, I drove through six inches of snow, ice and a −50°F wind chill, expecting an empty classroom. Everyone was there. “What the hell are you doing here?” I asked. “There was nothing better to do,” they replied. 🤷 After two weeks of brutal cold and accumulated snow, I rang my then-friend McDonald and demanded to know why she had recommended Regina over Victoria. “You needed a post,” she said. “Yeah—but not a trading post!” During my final year, I won the department’s tenure-track position. One week later, the Dean cancelled it for “budgetary constraints.” Unofficially, I was told the department had chosen me over his golfing buddy. The position was reinstated that fall. The golfing buddy was hired. Fortunately, I landed at UTM directing the Hitachi Survey Research Centre. Starting salary: $48,000. Average workweek: 120 hours. Next chapter: the food court, the Senior Tutor and Chair, the NSA and Navy colleagues—and THE IT GUY. 🎪 ⚖️🦉🪽⚜️ Just Tracy, Just ’Cause. PARSIMONY. CLARITY. VIRTUE.
