@zoechasewriter: I finished Jane Eyre and came away loving it, hating it, and thinking about it constantly. Rochester is manipulative. His “redemption” feels questionable. Jane’s insistence on equality and her willingness to walk away from the man she loves because she refuses to betray her morals is incredible. And then there’s Bertha. How can a novel give us one of literature’s most compelling stories about a woman demanding to be treated as a full human being, while simultaneously dehumanizing another woman? I don’t think Jane Eyre is a perfect feminist text, and I don’t even think I agree with everything it wants me to believe. BUT, nearly 200 years later, Rochester is still recognizable, and Jane’s struggle for dignity and equality is also still recognizable. Jane Eyre has changed a little piece of me and will always have a special place in my heart. 🖤 Thank you to everyone who read Jane Eyre with me this past month! #janeeyre #literature #gothicliterature #literaturetiktok #classicbooks

I didn't like Mr Rochester at first, I straight out thought he would be the villain 😭 but in the end he managed to grow on me, he was a powerful man that thought he could have it all with no consequence and got humbled by the narrative to not take everything for granted. I also liked how he could have let bertha die in the fire but still risked his life to try to save her and the other servants. On another note, have you noticed the similarities between Jane and Bertha? I read a really interesting paper that explained really well and I'm obsessed!

I was really disappointed when she came back to Rochester but when she first left, the way she didn't have a second thought and knew she had to do it, was thinking about how she didn't deserve it was so beautiful. Although she considers herself dull and boring, she's such a great character.
