I always read this song as exactly why mulan was able to stand out from all the other soldiers and achieve all she achieved, because the thing is shang is right, he cant make a man out of mulan because she is not a man, and only after she stops trying to act like all the others and instead uses her brain she was able to become a true soldier. Thats what the pole test is, she stopped trying to climb whith brute strenght instead using her brains. It really shows that what shang was singing was directed to something mulan would never be: a man; and only after she stopped trying to be it she was able to succed. The song isnt that much an irony but more the fact that mulan as a woman disnt need to follow those rules to be a soldier
