John has done the work and shown moral courage. He’s a living legend and deserves to be celebrated. So many of us look up to him for his creativity and his visionary genius. It’s such a shame. The how here mattered, and the Met got the timing wrong. Canceling the show didn’t correct that — it made things worse. This is now another event that divides us, and it’s made the hurt of his past remarks an open wound again, instead of the teaching moment it could have been. I believe in accountability and I believe in forgiveness. I am deeply disappointed and sad. John has done the work and shown moral courage. He deserved more grace, and this could have been education instead of exile.

I fully agree with you, HOWEVER, the met gala is being held the same day as Yom Hashoah. Personally, that’s my problem. But you’re so right, he has done the work, and he is a wonderful designer.

I have a rule that if someone apologizes for past antisemitism and shows genuine remorse or admits they were wrong, even if it was yesterday, I open my arms to them until given proof that it wasn’t genuine or they backslid.

This is such a good take. I feel so torn too - like I believe in second chances and redemption BUT I also feel like if he done something egregious toward any other minority group, this wouldn’t even be a conversation. He’d be canceled forever AND unemployed

I believe that he also was a genius. I also believe that he has done the work and is doing the work and people should back off and let him grow as we all have made mistakes and move forward may become better people for it. You should not have to carry the Scarlet letter around with you for the rest of your life.

He didn’t just attack a Jewish woman. He also called her friend a “f-cking Asian bastard” & other awful things. So when Asian hate and antisemitism are extremely high levels in the US, I really don’t think we should platform someone like that.
