@leahshomestead: We raised 97 Freedom Ranger chickens for 11 weeks… and ended up putting 427 pounds of chicken in our freezer. 😳🐓 All in, we spent about $1,500—including $300 to have them processed because if you know us, you KNOW we weren’t processing 97 chickens ourselves. 😂 Could we buy some chicken cheaper at the grocery store? Yep. But for us, knowing exactly how our food was raised and where it came from makes every bit of the work worth it. And please… nobody tell me we should’ve raised Cornish Cross. Don’t even get me started. 😂 #Homesteading #MeatChickens #FreedomRangers
hormones have been banned in poultry for 70 years...

Only $300 for processing?! I was expecting so much more for 97 chickens.

Hey 👋🏻 Commercial chicken isn't treated with hormones at all. Those cornish cross the CAFOs raise are just given feed 24/7, and because they've been bred to eat nonstop, have half the skeleton mass, and twice the muscle mass. that's how they get so big.
Now the antibiotics, that is something that is still happening.
I am not shaming on your endeavor at all. I lovw watching people take control of the food security and raise their own food. I just want to make sure you are aware of the misconception that the chickens are treated with hormones is completely false. Even still, I do not blame you for raising your own Rangers. it is worth it 💯

I'd love to see the difference. Also, aren't store bought chickens injected with brine that artificially increases their weight?

I raised three Cornish cross with my flock one year just to see because everybody kept talking about them. One of them died before it was even able to be processed and the other two were so fatty and so unhealthy looking when I processed them that I decided seeing how they don’t even live long enough to lay an egg and truly see like how good they are healthwise I was never raising them again.

you can do it more sustainably, without out the need for space. a tagging system. 2 incubators. 2 smaller pens instead of one big one.

4.4lb average isn’t great unfortunately. We do 10 weeks on Cornish cross and average 8lbs dressed. If you have a small family, 4.4lbs is ok. But I’d rather get more bang for my buck. If I’m going to raise it I want as much meat back as possible.

I really want to know what you do with the surplus, I mean how many people are in the family, do you sell the rest or keep it all for yourselves?

When you buy a chicken at the store it’s been injected with water to boost the weight. You got 497 actual pounds of meat.
