I feel your analogy with attractiveness lacks nuance, because there is actual social currency with being the conventional beauty standard. That would be like a white person complaining to a group of minorities how hard life is. And sure their specific life may be hard, but they are also living life as a white person… now imagine that life and being Black…or tie it back to attractiveness, imagine that life and being ugly. It’s hard to empathize with someone you cannot relate to. Empathy requires stepping into someone else’s shoes and experiencing the same emotions. Sympathy is feeling sorrow/pity for someone’s hardship.
