Herbal tea When it comes to truly learning herbs, tasting them individually is one of the best ways to understand what each plant brings to an herbal tea. Today’s single-herb taste test is lemon balm, a beautifully aromatic member of the mint family with a flavor and fragrance that are much softer than its relatives. Lemon balm: Fresh, bright, and gently citrusy, lemon balm has a delicate lemon aroma with soft green, slightly sweet, herbaceous notes underneath. Unlike peppermint or spearmint, it doesn’t have that sharp cooling menthol character. Instead, brewed lemon balm herbal tea is smooth, light, subtly grassy, and pleasantly lemony, with a mild sweetness and clean finish. Longer or stronger steeps can bring forward more earthy, vegetal, and slightly bitter notes. Aroma: Lemon peel, fresh-cut herbs, soft florals, and green leaves. Taste: Mild citrus, gentle sweetness, fresh greenery, and a soft herbaceous finish. Mouthfeel: Light, smooth, and easy-drinking without much astringency. Beyond its flavor, lemon balm has a long history of traditional herbal use for calming the nervous system and supporting relaxation. It is commonly enjoyed as an herbal tea for occasional stress, nervous tension, restlessness, and winding down before bed. Lemon balm is also traditionally used for digestive comfort, particularly when stress and nervousness seem to settle in the stomach. That combination is what makes lemon balm such an interesting single-herb tea: its aroma feels bright and uplifting while its traditional herbal uses lean toward calm, relaxation, and digestive support. For a taste test, try 1–2 teaspoons of dried lemon balm per 8 ounces of hot water. Steep covered for 5–10 minutes so those delicate aromatic compounds stay in your cup rather than escaping with the steam. Smell the dry herb first, smell it again immediately after brewing, then taste it as it cools—you may notice different citrus, green, and sweet notes emerge at each stage. Sometimes the best way to understand an herbal tea ingredient is to let that herb speak for itself. #herbaltea #modern_floki #herbalmedicine #herbalremedies #herbal
