@nerdpiece: Rare and out-of-print books are being destroyed and then sold back to you. just to comply with a legal loophole. do you think there should be stricter protections for preserving physical media in an ai era? #internetarchive #opensource #linuxmasterrace #aaronswartz #preservation

RoD! :
The books could still be donated to libraries or schools after scanning. If their product is so good they don’t have nothing to fear from books.

courts said the internet archive isnt allowed to run an online library but ai IS allowed to destroy books and feed them into the plagiarism machine

worst part is that the AI wont even remember the books and will often hallucinate details. The text is just there so it can be better at talking

Jenny ☠️🃏 :
genuinely zero surprise that the organization dedicated to archival is willing to go the extra mile with non destructive scanning methods while the people making giant pollution machines to fuel plagiarism are willing to cut spines to cut corners and destroy books to prevent other companies from using the same ones. The idea that they do this because it makes it transformative and therefore fair use is such BS and there's no way the judge who made that ruling wasn't on the take. In a world that wasn't being run by genuinely evil tech oligarchs that judge would be impeached and disbarred.

The destruction part is a loophole. The argument for allowance is by copying for training and destroying the existing one they retain a singular digital copy not for redistribution as training a model isn't distributing it. it's just a legal workaround they're doing to avoid fines.

I don't think it's a conspiracy to destroy knowledge. In the same way data centers aren't a conspiracy to destroy water. To me the truth is worse: They just don't care. they do everything in the cheapest dirtiest way because they just want to make a much money as possible and saddle the rest of us with the consequences.

destruction is part of the intent, they do not want competitors to scan the same rare books.

hi I work in a records repository where we digitize everything there is no reason to destroy the original material! its actually far easier to scan without destroying them

There's no conspiracy here, it's just way cheaper to do it destructively. Chop the spine off and send it through a feed, a whole book is done in minutes. Way faster than paying someone to turn pages manually. Just the benign evil of every day capitalism.

correction, a judge ruled that they MUST destroy them, as copying them is illegal, but transferring the content isn't.
