@brighamofutah: Shortly before the end of his life, Rockwell had been arrested with the 21-year-old disappearance of a traveling group from California known as the Aiken Party, a crime of which, it is generally accepted, he was guilty. The party had been traveling through Utah during a period of heightened tensions in 1857, shortly after the infamous actions of the Iron County militia at Mountain Meadows. He was released on a massive $15,000 bail (equal in value to over half a million in today’s dollars), paid for by some of his wealthy friends. At the time of his passing, Porter Rockwell was one of the longest-lived followers of the Mormon movement, having been an early devotee and friend to the movement’s founder, Joseph Smith. He had been Smith’s protector and outlived him; he had been the bodyguard of one of Smith’s successors, Brigham Young, and had outlived him. Crazy. I never once thought Porter was buried in SLC. Never gave it much thought because I assumed he likely died & had been buried elsewhere. As long as I’ve lived near SLC I’ve never gone to the cemetery to look to see who all from that past is actually buried there.
