And then God comes walking in the garden, and the man opens his mouth and gives the first description of fear in the Bible, and the word he uses is naked. He had been sentenced to die and what he named was being seen. The first thing human hands ever made in Scripture was a covering. Hebrews says people spent their entire lives as slaves to the fear of death, and Chrysostom put the diagnosis in one line in the fourth century: a man who fears death "is a slave, and submits to all things rather than die." But the thing underneath the fear of dying is usually the fear of being found out. And God's answer to people who hid was to make himself visible, in daylight, stripped, beside a road, with the charge posted over his head in three languages.
