The World Trade Center Twin Towers — a skyline that once defined New York City. 🗽 Before September 11, 2001, the World Trade Center stood in Lower Manhattan as one of the most recognizable landmarks in the world. The Twin Towers — the North Tower and South Tower — were 110 stories tall and became an unmistakable part of the New York City skyline. Then came September 11, 2001 — 9/11. The attacks changed New York City, the United States, and the world forever. The World Trade Center, Ground Zero, Lower Manhattan, the Financial District, Wall Street, Battery Park, Tribeca, South Street Seaport, and the surrounding neighborhoods became part of one of the most significant moments in modern American history. Nearly 3,000 people were killed in the September 11 attacks, including office workers, visitors, airline passengers, firefighters, police officers, paramedics, emergency medical workers, Port Authority officers, and other first responders. The 9/11 Memorial recognizes the 2,977 people killed in the 2001 attacks at the World Trade Center, Pentagon, and near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. 911 Memorial +1 Among those who responded were members of the FDNY — New York City Fire Department, NYPD — New York City Police Department, Port Authority Police Department, EMS, emergency medical personnel, construction workers, volunteers, recovery workers, and countless civilians who helped others escape. The Twin Towers were more than skyscrapers. They were offices, restaurants, observation decks, businesses, stores, transportation connections, and part of everyday life in New York City. The original World Trade Center complex included 7 buildings, an underground shopping concourse, and thousands of workers and visitors. The Twin Towers dominated the skyline and became symbols of New York itself. 911 Memorial Membership Today, the former World Trade Center site includes the National September 11 Memorial & Museum, the two reflecting pools marking the original footprints of the Twin Towers, the Survivor Tree, One World Trade Center, the Oculus, Liberty Park, and the rebuilt World Trade Center campus. 911 Memorial +1 The 9/11 Memorial's two reflecting pools sit directly in the footprints of the former North and South Towers. The names of those killed are inscribed around the pools, creating a permanent place of remembrance in Lower Manhattan. 911 Memorial Nearby landmarks connected to the history and geography of Lower Manhattan include Wall Street, Battery Park, the Financial District, Broadway, St. Paul's Chapel, the Hudson River, the East River, Tribeca, Chinatown, the Brooklyn Bridge, South Street Seaport, Liberty State Park, Jersey City, Hoboken, Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens, and the New York City skyline. The story of the World Trade Center also connects New York to Washington, D.C., Arlington, Virginia, and Shanksville, Pennsylvania, the other locations directly affected by the September 11 attacks. For New Yorkers, first responders, survivors, families, witnesses, firefighters, police officers, EMS workers, recovery workers, downtown workers, students, teachers, business owners, and people around the world, September 11 remains a day that is impossible to forget. Today, the skyline is different. The Twin Towers are gone, but their place in history remains. World Trade Center. Twin Towers. New York City. Lower Manhattan. Ground Zero. September 11. 9/11.
