no matter the situation guaranteed there will be comments full of "i would NEVER" never what? never become so financially unwell that you can't even afford to feed your animal anymore or vet care? never be forced from your home and have nowhere to go where they can come with you? become completely homeless and not be able to feed them? never die suddenly? shut up, people. shelters have so pushed this idea that surrender is the most evil thing you can do, that you're an evil being for giving up a pet for any reason at all, that you're just a pos for trying to help them and in the same breath will damn you for not surrendering them and instead letting them starve or go without vet care or becoming overwhelmed. oh and don't dare rehome privately because that's evil too. but nobody ever has anything to say about dogs being passed from foster home to shelter to foster home. sometimes shit happens. not everyone is evil for having to give up their pet

Former shelter worker, high volume facility (400+ kennels per species): a good 20% of the animals we had for adoption were surrenders or confiscates from death, incarceration, homelessness, or terminal illness surrenders. 1 in 5. Like this video demonstrates, Please be kind when talking about owner surrenders.

I was homless for 3 months at the height of covid and when I knew I was gonna be in that situation, I gave my cat to a friend I knew would take care of her. The last video I got was my baby playing with her new brother cat. I dont regret my decision bc Im lucky to be alive today and she was warm and safe that entire time. By the time I was stable she was adjusted to her new life and I knew it'd be cruel to take that away. But not a day goes by that I dont miss her.

To be honest seeing this comment section filled with people acknowledging how hard of a decision it is to give up your pet means so much to me. I have had a cat since I was 10. I’m 21 one now and she’s starting to show signs of kidney failure, I’m a college student and my family doesn’t have the funds to help me with her vet bills. And I don’t have the money due to school and other expenses. Recently I have been looking at shelters to give her too, because she is such a sweet girl and I know she would make a family so happy if they had the money to take care of her. I cry all the time knowing I’m giving her up. A part of me does feel like I failed her. But seeing so many of you say I’m doing good, that I’m giving her a chance to be loved in the way she needs means so much.

I work at an animal shelter the most heartbreaking case for me was this cat Abbey who came in. She was a senior girl whose owner passed and she was all alone. Weeks went by with no one wanting her and us trying everything to help her and it didn’t really help her she was completely shut down and wouldn’t even move a lot. My heart hurts to think about it still and the way she was just so confused and scared.

I fostered an aussie who was surrendered by a young woman who was struggling to afford her tuition and apartment. Her dad offered to pay for her and let her move in, but she couldn’t bring her dog. When I tell you that boy was clearly the most well-loved dog
