I’ve had a trainer describe this like if a guy comes up to you in a club and is polite, says hello, and interacts with you with a level of respect to you and your space, you reward that with positivity.. if a guy comes in grabs you or slaps your arse, you’re going to get loud and get them out of your space.. similar with horses.. respect of you and your safety should always be first and foremost

Be worth watching Warwick from about 10 years ago. Was a different trainer and I felt was a good middle ground with firm but fair and always clear. He never let a horse be confused on what he was asking. Also you worded all of your thoughts/ methods in a great way ☺️

People need to understand that having clear boundaries is also for the horse's safety. If they haven't been taught to follow our instructions out in the world they're going to make some dangerous decisions for themselves and others. Teaching them impulse control and showing them an acceptable way to get what they want isn't mean or cruel. It's creating a partnership where everyone is safe and happy.

I'm a middle grounder too, firm and fair all the way. Horses (and dogs too!) with boundaries they understand, are happier animals.

My girl actually likes me better and is happier if I give her firm boundaries. She used to do this thing where she’d try rub her face on me, the second I tell her no (by gently but firmly pushing her face away) and stick to it she actually calms down.

Fair! I work with my horse at liberty with positive reinforcement, even though I let him say no, I also will say no sometimes as well and then redirect his mind onto something else that's even more interesting. As for letting him rub his head on my after riding, I allow it. But only because I invite him to, he knows when to stop. It's like a reward after carrying me, when he doesn't really have to be such a saint, but he is and I am grateful. But I am a woo-woo kind of trainer afterall. I'm pagan and say "for Poseidon" as I mount up 😂

I am strict on basic manners & my space. My worst head injury- a subdural haemorrhage- happened just feeding a very sweet mare. As my head was coming up from mixing her feed in her bin, her head was coming down to eat. Her jaw connected with my head & knocked me out for I dont even know how long. It is just so easy for a simple accident to be a serious injury. They still get heaps of treats, scratches & loving. That doesnt need to stop.

The kindest thing you can do is to set boundaries. I know a horse that I set boundaries to who now actually prefers coming to me rather than there owner. I believe it's because the horse and I have mutual respect towards one another.

Gotta have good citizens. It’s how they have a good life & not someone’s problem. I find it interesting that you class Warwick Schiller as woo-woo. I’d say 15 years ago he was pretty hard arse but has really changed paths in recent years (context: I’m not a “believer”)

can you show examples of how you deal with these behaviours? Im just getting back into horses and my mare is doing both these things and she knows she is stronger than me. i think I know what I should be doing cause I used to train horses but having kids has ruined my brain so I will definitely admit i need help these days and I dont want to do the wrong thing and make it worse. I have only had her about 8 weeks and I have worked on groundwork cause she lacks there. definitely so much to work on. which she is learning fast. but was so embarrassed having the body worker yesterday and my pony did both these things but especially the pushing and rubbing on me. i was very distracted talking but it was an eye opener that I need to work on these asap!! I did have the grass issue sorted but after letting her graze the last week obviously I have created a monster. 😅
