A former Colorado neurosurgeon is back in a hospital, but this time he’s the patient, and facing felony charges after a shootout with law enforcement. Investigators say Dr. Thomas Steffens, 72, had been on the run after allegedly drugging a woman at a bar and sexually assaulting her. When authorities served a search warrant at his Colorado home, Steffens fled on a Greyhound bus and ended up in Fort Pierce, Florida. Deputies and U.S. Marshals tracked him down and boxed in the car he was riding in. Another woman was inside. When she got out, she warned deputies he had a gun and wouldn’t go without a fight, allegedly saying he wanted to “go out in a blaze.” Officials say Steffens opened fire from the passenger seat, striking multiple law enforcement vehicles and wounding a U.S. Marshal in the leg. After two volleys of gunfire and a roughly 10-minute standoff, officers took him into custody. Authorities say Steffens remained defiant even after being shot, at one point raising his middle finger at deputies. He was taken to a hospital in stable condition and is expected to survive. Steffens faces rape-related charges in Colorado and additional charges in Florida, including attempted murder of law enforcement officers. Federal charges are also being considered. #truecrime
