This happened on April 30, 2025, in Northeast Ohio. Juan Wyckoff said he was driving his Kia Sportage on I-90 in Westlake when a Chevy Silverado driven by Brooklyn Police Sgt. Paul Stein struck his vehicle and then took off. Wyckoff followed, recording the pursuit; speeds reportedly reached 103 mph, and Stein eventually drove into the Brooklyn Police Department employee lot. Surveillance footage shows that when Wyckoff followed Stein to the police station, Stein shoved him and kicked/stomped at his leg multiple times near the employee entrance. Stein was never actually tested for intoxication, so we can’t establish that he was intoxicated. Wyckoff repeatedly told responding officers that he smelled alcohol on Stein’s breath and specifically asked why Stein wasn’t being drug/alcohol tested. According to subsequent reporting and Wyckoff’s lawsuit, there is no record that officers ever administered such a test. Brooklyn’s chief ultimately concluded that Stein committed traffic violations but reportedly found no policy violation in the physical confrontation. Stein received a written reprimand concerning the driving incident. Stein was eventually fired in an unrelated incident involving repeatedly punching a restrained woman, and Wyckoff filed a federal lawsuit alleging that Brooklyn police effectively covered for Stein during the Wyckoff incident. The police chief resigned two days after that lawsuit was filed. JaJuan Wyckoff and Khadijah Wyckoff filed suit against the City of Brooklyn, former Sgt. Paul Stein, former Chief Scott Mielke, and several other Brooklyn officers. The case was removed to federal court on May 14, 2026, in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio: Wyckoff et al. v. City of Brooklyn et al., No. 1:26-cv-01129.
