It is because we have failed to understand the true meaning of "malasakit." Malasakit means caring for others. It means doing what is right—not because we will be rewarded, and not because we fear punishment, but because our actions affect other people. If we truly had malasakit, why would we throw our trash anywhere? Why would corrupt government officials remain indifferent to the lives lost whenever floods and disasters strike? Why would we break the rules whenever doing so benefits us at the expense of others? Until this nation understands and practices genuine malasakit, progress will remain an empty promise. And yet we judge other Filipinos who choose to work, settle, and build better lives abroad? Why shouldn't they, when this nation keeps on voting people who appeared on telenovelas, and the convicted keeps getting away in neck braces. The Filipino may always love the Philippines—but it will always loathe the system. Blood is thick, but the stomach and brain won't hang on forever. Good luck sa atin, or as the typical Juan on the street says, "Bawi na lang sa next life."
