Definitely one of Faulkner’s best; certainly one of the most accessible. A fairly straightforward story, certainly compared to “Absalom, Absalom,” or “The Sound and the Fury.”

One thing I find really interesting is how class shapes the whole story. The Bundrens don’t have the luxury of simply grieving. They still have to work, travel, worry about money, and take care of practical things. Their circumstances really influence the way each of them deals with Addie’s death.

Such a difficult author to read, I read the Sound and the Fury in my undergrad year, I do look forward to re-reading it now. As I lay dying actually sounds like The Sound and the Fury as they switch characters in there as well.
