I just terminated my contract with one of the biggest canvas print companies in the world. Here's what I learned about art licensing 🧑‍🎨 Licensing can be wonderful and highly profitable for some. I don't want to discourage you. I want to help you set real expectations with what I learned the hard way. When I signed, I thought my work was going to blow up. Six figures, maybe five. A household name. I'm a dreamer. But that's not what happened. Here's the reality: 🖼️ My work was buried among hundreds of artists, if not thousands 🖼️ Royalties are often around 10%, and with an agent it's split 50/50. My rate was 9% 🖼️ My first round had a 10% rate but required exclusivity. That 1% wasn't worth it. If you give exclusivity, make sure the money is worth it 🖼️ My work wasn't a top seller out of the gate, so it got buried like it didn't exist 🖼️ These companies mass produce, so prices are extremely low. That undercuts your value and your direct sales. They'd sell a print for $80. My cut was under $8. Four dollars with an agency 🖼️ Payouts were quarterly with a threshold I often didn't hit What I learned is that the wrong licensing partner treats your work like a product, not a story. The reach, the money, the prestige sounds great. But you have to tell the difference between a partner who pushes your work and one who just stocks it. Here's what says it all: one tiny print sold directly to a collector earns me more than a year of royalties did. Terminating was right for me. You might have better luck. I'm not saying don't try licensing. I'm saying be mindful, be practical, and make an educated decision. I don't want to see anyone locked in a multi-year contract. I got out of mine. Have you licensed your art? What's your experience? If you're looking for guidance and transparent expertise from an artist that has been doing this for decades, DM me or visit link in bio 🔗 #artmentor #artlicensing #artbusiness #artmarketing #artistsupport
