@theculturedump: BOOM! Apocalypse! Fire! Explosions! That is what the Victorian painter, John Martin, was known for. This is his EPIC painting “The Great Day of His Wrath” (1851). It shocked audiences, and people came from all over the UK to see it when it was exhibited. But critics dismissed Martin’s works as “populist”. They felt that he relied entirely on visual drama, and had none of the elevated moral or mythological messaging which they expected from “high” academic painting. This same hierarchy exists today. Society tends to to deem horror and action films as less “cultured”, and other genres — like historical drama — as more refined. What do you think? Something about me is broken, because when I saw it I was immediately enthralled and captivated by the composition, then I learned it's a depiction of Christian mythology and my sister interest immediately evaporated. It was suddenly so tacky and flat in a literal blink of an eye.
