In an era when AI can produce speeches for us to read, I find myself pausing whenever I meet a truly good speech. Not merely a well-written one. A living one. I watched this speech delivered by the retired Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta in Addis Ababa, and I found myself envying whoever wrote it. And, perhaps even more, the person who had the privilege of standing there and reading it. Because a good piece of writing is not merely art. It is a kind of presence. It is the writer having been quiet enough, long enough, to hear what other people have been unable to say. It is entering the rooms of a people's lives and finding the words that have been sitting there all along. It is naming what the heart whispers, giving language to that which has been sitting anxiously somewhere deep in the soul, felt but unnamed, understood but never quite spoken. The finest writing does not make people think, I have never thought of that before. Sometimes it makes them think, Yes. That. I have always felt that. That is a different kind of writing. It reaches beyond the educated room, beyond the podium, beyond the people who know how to applaud a clever sentence. It reaches the old woman in the village who may never have read the speech, but whose heart recognises it immediately. It reaches the young child who will one day come across those words, long after the people who spoke them are gone, and feel that strange intimacy we feel when we encounter the words of Martin Luther, Churchill, Mandela — and realise that there once lived people who had a soul, and who found a way to put part of it into language. That, to me, is the miracle of a great speech. Not that it sounds impressive. That it sounds true. And perhaps this is what makes the age of AI so interesting. We are entering a world in which words will become abundant. Speeches will be generated in seconds. Poems will be written on command. Elegant paragraphs will never be scarce again. But abundance of words is not the same thing as abundance of meaning. A machine can arrange beautiful sentences. But a human being must still live enough life to know which sentence deserves to be spoken. A good writer has to have listened to grief. To mothers. To old men. To children. To history. To silence. To the things people say when they are not trying to sound intelligent. To the things they confess only when the room is dark and the world has become quiet. Perhaps that is why the greatest speeches feel less like performances and more like recognitions. Someone has simply found the words for what many people have been carrying. And today, when so many people stand behind podiums holding pages of words they wrote, copied, borrowed, commissioned, or had written for them, I hope there are still a few speeches being written from the heart. And, for the heart. Because the world does not only need more people speaking. It needs people who have listened deeply enough to know what the world has been trying to say. There are things sitting quietly inside us. Things our fathers could not say, things our mothers carried without language and things a nation feels before it knows how to name them. Things an old woman in a village understands without ever having written them down. And somewhere, I hope, there are still writers willing to sit quietly enough to hear them. And brave enough to give them a voice.
