I’ve spent the better part of my adult life finding ways back to my parents during hard seasons… not looking for pity. But looking for them to call me to a higher standard; to give me the pep talk to not just do the right thing, but the holy thing. I have spent the better part of Bedford’s life repeating these statements to him at doctor’s appointments, in parking lots, next to curbs, and stairs, and spaces not made for him. I’ve caught myself watching this back over and over again, because even as a grown adult not facing a physical limitation, I need to be told to keep going. It’s harder to stay. It’s harder to have the conversation. It’s harder to apologize. It’s harder to not give in. It’s harder to sit through the uncomfortable. It’s harder to choose grace, kindness, and gentleness. But just like the world isn’t necessarily created with Bedford’s little red walker in mind, it isn’t created for people to do hard things. It isn’t created for people to put others first. Very few are stepping to the line to do the hard thing, because it’s easier to point the finger. It’s easier to walk away. It’s easier to give up and give in. It’s been a very hard week with Bedford for multiple reasons. But Bedford doesn’t get a choice that he has wheels on his path. He still goes. He has to. I want him to. I know he does, too, but that requires more from him than it does for most. So if you need to hear it today: We can do the hard thing. Don’t you dare tell yourself otherwise. #buildforbeddy #schwartzjampelsyndrome #rarediseaseawareness
