Most of y’all know me as Auntie the teacher, Auntie the reader, Auntie the spiritual worker, Auntie the one answering questions, holding space, facilitating conversations, teaching classes, praying, writing, creating, and showing up. What you don’t see is Auntie outside. And imma change that! One of the things people don’t talk about enough is how much energy it actually takes to do this work. Spiritual work is beautiful work, but it is still work. There is a responsibility that comes with being someone people turn to when they’re confused, hurting, searching, grieving, celebrating, questioning, or standing at a crossroads. People often see the visible parts. They see the classes, the lives, the readings, the posts, the teachings, and the guidance. What they don’t always see are the hours behind the scenes. The preparation. The studying. The praying. The listening. The discernment. The emotional labor. The constant shifting between your own life and the lives of people who trust you enough to bring you their stories. Or the labor of ALWAYS being present in BOTH realms. Truth is: if I’m not careful, I can prioritize pouring. Pouring into clients. Pouring into students. Pouring into community. Pouring into family. Pouring into Spirit. Pouring into everybody except MYSELF. I tell people all the time to rest. I tell people to take a break, go outside, spend time in nature, take the trip, laugh more, sleep more, stop carrying things that don’t belong to them, and remember that they are human beings before they are workers, healers, caregivers, parents, leaders, or providers. The challenge comes when it’s time to take our own advice. There is always one more thing that could be done. One more email to answer. One more project to finish. One more person who needs help. One more responsibility waiting to be handled. The work will always be there. What won’t always be there is the opportunity to enjoy your life if you keep postponing it. I’ve learned over the years that rest isn’t something I earn after I’ve finished everything. If I wait until everything is done, I’ll never rest. There will always be another responsibility waiting in line. So sometimes I intentionally step away. Not because anything is wrong. I step away because I need to remember that joy is sacred too. The ocean is medicine. Laughter is medicine. Peace is medicine. Stillness is medicine. Being present in my own life is medicine. This is a side of me many people rarely get to see. A reminder that the goal isn’t to spend our lives constantly pouring from the cup. The goal is to make sure the cup gets filled too. ❤️
