@historicallagos: LAGOS WAS AT WAR BUT DID IT LOOK LIKE IT? Lagos the capital of all Nigeria except the Ibo. That was how a foreign documentary described Lagos during the Nigerian Civil War. And watching these footage decades later, the contrast is striking, a country was fighting a brutal civil war, yet Lagos barely looked mobilised for one. There were few uniforms on the streets, No obvious shortages, No widespread signs of starvation, Life in Lagos continued. Yet from this same city, the Federal Military Government was directing the war against Biafra , while newspapers and radio were being used to mobilise Nigerians behind the Federal war effort. (African Studies Centre Leiden) Lagos even had a civil-defence committee established in 1967 to prepare civilians for possible attacks and air raids. (NSCDC) How did Lagos manage to remain relatively removed from the war in 1967 and why does Lagos still seem to have that same ability to feel detached from Nigeria’s biggest crises? Head of state at 35! But these days even 35 year olds are still struggling financially. The old times were better for young ones to make good use of their lives.
