That last part matters. This is not a broad heart-protection indication for everyone using tirzepatide for weight loss. It applies specifically to high-risk adults with type 2 diabetes. The approval was based on SURPASS-CVOT, which followed 13,299 patients and compared Mounjaro with Trulicity, a medication already proven to provide cardiovascular benefit. Mounjaro produced an 8% lower rate of major cardiovascular events, but it established noninferiority, not statistical superiority. This is still an important expansion. Mounjaro is no longer FDA-approved only for blood-sugar control. It now carries a formal cardiovascular risk-reduction indication for the right patients. And one clarification: Mounjaro, not Zepbound, received this specific indication. Both contain tirzepatide, but FDA approvals follow the brand and patient population.
