@candikinney_np: You haven’t had a meaningful raise in three years, but every year they expect you to see more and more patients. You need permission to take vacation that’s yours. You have to check your PTO balance when your child is sick. And someone else decides what your time as a Nurse Practitioner is worth. I was terrified of giving up my “guaranteed” paycheck too. Then I realized I was using that false “security” to justify staying stuck and going for more. Sometimes the best financial risk you’ll take is betting on yourself. Got my NP degree earlier this year, and before I even got a job decided to take a long break....like maybe never. My kids are only young once, my body is young now. I can work later, but right now I'm going to enjoy the few years I have left with my kids at home and being able to experience life with them while my body still allows it.
