It does sound like the friendship has run its course. Also, this isn’t the focus of the discussion, but I wanted to comment since she mentioned it… I always worry when a spouse gets upset when they are not invited to every single event. She said it causes tension with her husband when husbands are not invited to these events. So it’s not just that her husband isn’t invited, it is that husbands are not invited. I am a firm believer that couples need to experience things with friends outside of being a couple. Like I said, not the focal point of the discussion at all, but just something that popped out to me.

You need to be ok being the villain in someone else’s story. It’s been one of the hardest lessons I’ve had to learn. If you aren’t happy in the relationship you need to do what’s best for you. Knowing she’s going to slander you to the other friends doesn’t matter, doesn’t sound like you like them anyway, so who cares what they think?

She's trying to paint her friend a different color instead of seeing her true colors. People evolve in relationships. She needs to cut he4 friend off.

"I feel tokenized in the group . . .she apologizes for her friends remarks". As someone who has been the only woman or only Black person in the group, those words stood out to me.

she's a grown woman that is a mom. be busy. that's it. they already don't like you so what if she "slander" you to the group. on top of that. why be friends with someone that slanders people. sounds like a hostage situation

Time to protect her own peace without the worry of accommodating for someone who has shown a lack of empathy

I’m struggling to understand why you would want to continue a friendship with this woman. There’s a difference in accepting all kinds of people and doing life with people who don’t align with your values. If her friends speak disparaging to/about you, she’s likely doing it behind your back.

Why bother with the long route? Just stop hanging out with her.

Just quiet quit the friendship. If she calls it out, just say “I’ve been busy” No reason to prolong things and that so-called friend will probably trash talk the writer regardless.

You gave plenty of good options. I would quit going and let her talk. Or the friend could be an adult and talk it out

I think you need to look at why this is tough for you. Why are you needing to appease and please her? You, your needs, and your families needs have grown apart from hers over time. That’s okay. Please take time to invest you energy in real friends who support you where you are. No one needs energy vampires in their circle. You sound very kind, understanding, and thoughtful. You deserve the same in return.

This is a lot, but this doesn’t sound like a friendship. This sounds like an emotional support relationship disguised as a friendship my grandmother used to always say if we keep living we were always grow and change and it seems like you have outgrown this Situationship I personally would advise you not to put any more energy into this put it into this and move on and you guys enjoy the rest of your lives

It sounds like she’s more afraid of being talked about by the “ friend” than actually losing the friendship. I’ve been there!

Sounds like you need to step back from this friendship. Just explain to her you would just rather meet one on one

Her full schedule feels like a cover to hide from one on one time. Her friends comments about your community is a huge red flag especially since your friend groups dont over lap. You becoming more 'in demand' as a representative of your community feels like your part of her collection. There is nothing easy here unfortunately. You're are either going to break up her collection of friends Or you're going to stay and play the part. There's no way to control how she will react. I feel in this situation there will be fallout regardless of how you approach her. In the end all you can do is protect your peace end things on your terms and move forward.

Sounds like OP only liked the friend for her generosity (what she can get from her) and is overly concerned about “keeping up appearances”.

Wow. This hit home hard. I recently went through something similar. based on what OP was saying, though, I'm guessing that she was really just wanting a decent break without pressure and then if the friendship were to be able to be preserved, it would be something that could be revisited naturally after some time had passed. I had something similar happened with a friendship that had actually been very present for 20 years. Made the mistake of moving in with her temporarily as I was changing my life around and moving states. And got a firsthand view of what her life is really like and the people that she surrounds herself with, and I didn't like any of it. She is a very giving person, sociable, with a large friend group whom I don't care for either. But it all came with expectations. Needless to say, I couldn't avoid the big public friend break up. In the end, you definitely need to do what's right for you and your daughter.

Sometimes I find that if I start with, “I need your help with something…” it tends to start the conversation off well. Of course, I have to say it like the other person is helping me with my problem and it feels less of an attack to the other person
