@chillin.with.my.h: 🫙 20 THINGS NOBODY TELLS YOU ABOUT STORING HOME-CANNED FOOD! 👀 You spent HOURS growing it, prepping it, and canning it… but how you store those jars afterward matters WAY more than most people realize! Here are some things every home canner should know 👇 1️⃣ Store jars in a cool, dark, DRY place, not somewhere hot like an attic or garage. 2️⃣ ☀️ Sunlight can fade colors and reduce food quality over time. 3️⃣ ❄️ Freezing can cause jars to crack or break because the liquid expands. 4️⃣ 🌡️ BIG temperature swings aren’t good for your canned goods. 5️⃣ 🫙 Once jars have cooled, remove the screw bands before long-term storage. 6️⃣ 🚫 Don’t stack jars directly on top of each other. 7️⃣ 🏷️ LABEL EVERYTHING! Include the food, date, and recipe/source. 8️⃣ 🔄 Use FIFO: First In, First Out. Put your newest jars behind your oldest. 9️⃣ A sealed lid doesn’t mean the food will stay good forever. Canned food has a best-quality window. 🔟 Don’t store your jars directly on a damp basement floor. 1️⃣1️⃣ Rust on a band isn’t necessarily a food-safety issue, but serious corrosion or a compromised lid deserves attention. 1️⃣2️⃣ Keep canned food away from cleaners, gasoline, fertilizers, paint, and other chemicals. 1️⃣3️⃣ Don’t tighten a lid after processing to “make the seal stronger.” Once it’s properly sealed, leave it alone. 1️⃣4️⃣ A jar can potentially lose its seal after you put it on the shelf, so inspect it before opening. 1️⃣5️⃣ A little fading or discoloration doesn’t automatically mean spoilage, but unusual changes should never be ignored. 1️⃣6️⃣ ⚠️ NEVER rely on the smell test alone for questionable home-canned food. 1️⃣7️⃣ Never taste food from a jar you’re suspicious of to see if it’s safe. 1️⃣8️⃣ 💨 Bubbles aren’t automatically a sign of spoilage but new bubbling accompanied by leaking, spurting, unusual odors, or other changes is a red flag. 1️⃣9️⃣ Humidity matters! A damp storage area can contribute to rust and deterioration. 2️⃣0️⃣ And perhaps the BIGGEST tip of all… When in doubt, THROW IT OUT. 🚮 You worked too hard on your food to take a chance with a questionable jar! 👇 What’s one home-canning storage tip you learned the hard way or wish someone had told you sooner? 📌 SAVE THIS POST for the next time you’re organizing your pantry!#garden #growyourownfood #gardening #harvesting #canning
