You can learn without being “taught” as well. Pay attention to the work and then ask questions to fill in the stuff you can’t just see. A good apprentice will learn the rhythm of the work and anticipate needs.

If you are taking on an apprentice it's your job to teach them, they shouldn't have to run around and ask to be trained. If you don't want work to slow down due to this process then hire an experienced full time worker.

This is the best description of my first two years in the IBEW apprenticeship 25+yrs ago. Then I got lucky and started working with some old timers that wanted to teach and I learned so much. I remember the name of each guy and what he taught me all these years later. Being a good Brother and a good on the job teacher will stick with an apprentice far longer than being a douchebag to him.

When I was a 3rd year app my foreman allowed me to do all the layout on the façade buildings in the front of Treasure Island. He was a good one who allowed you to learn and grow. If you are a JE and you see that apprentice who is killing it, HELP HIM LEARN MORE!

I tried to get into the IBEW and was given a whole circle jerk to even try and take the aptitude test because having a GED wasn’t efficient enough for their mathematics bar. So nonunion I went,but I have never seen a trade turn a man down cause he wants to work which the ibew did.
