Usually it's better to just memorize usage for words like "Ser" and "Estar" while you give a food rule of thumb "Ser capaz de algo" doesn't follow the rule. "Soy capaz de leer sin lentes" but that can change. "La silla está hecha de madera" that's not going to change :)
The "ma" ending like you mention has exceptions like "La yema" if you want to be more specific the nouns of Greek origin ending in "ma" are masculine. This would just be a matter of remembering the gender of a noun instead of just thinking "-ma" equals masculine. La cama, la goma, la pluma, la rama, la retama, la suma, la llama, la crema, la alarma, la cima, la sima :)
