Verity is an example of modern physiological horror characters because the fear factor doesn’t just come from intimidating appearance or overwhelming power, but trust and familiarity, and the slow burn as you realize that he may be hiding something more sinister. Visually, Verity is very simple, a floating yellow smiley face, that simplicity is intentional, humans are drawn to simple, friendly facial expressions, and the characters design immediately lowers the viewers guard. What truly makes the design effective is how it never changes throughout the story, from the start until the very end, the same face begins to now be associated with more threatning behavior. The character’s name also adds an interesting layer of meaning. “Verity” literally means “truth,” yet much of the tension in the story revolves around uncertainty and mistrust. The audience is constantly questioning whether Verity is being honest, whether its intentions are genuine, and whether its guidance can be trusted. This contradiction may be intentional. A character named after truth becomes the source of doubt, forcing viewers to question every interaction. The irony strengthens the psychological aspect of the story and reinforces the idea that appearances can be deceptive. One of the most compelling themes associated with Verity is obsession. As the story progresses, Verity’s interest in the protagonist appears to deepen beyond what would be expected from a simple assistant.
