It really bothers me that this is being largely viewed as “well the mom is wrong because Hal does have trauma” as if that excludes him from still having white privilege. It’s the most basic and most common refutation to the concept of privilege that people “still go through x or y” but Hal does not have to consider the same fears that a black person does at all. I don’t think the point is that they’re flawed because they’re abusing their proximity to racism like so many are saying so I really appreciate this take for putting words how i feel. This is extremely common for minority parents to respond to the fact of how the world treated them and have to decide how they’re going to respond when they have children. You see this in sports a lot particularly in America or with immigrants and wanting their children to get good jobs so they don’t have to struggle like they did. It dips into abuse a lot and for some reason we’re not acting like because the second is true (the abuse) the initial reaction is somehow unfounded.

I think people missed 'The Watchmen' tv show... because they hired the same writer clearly because of the great work he did writing the first black super hero

There’s really interesting meta commentary on what it means to be a black superhero here too. His parents attitude reminds me a lot of writers who’s main priority is displaying black representation to inspire people but at the cost of the individuality of the character. John is bought up to be a black superhero and nothing else, his passions and interests are pushed aside due to the responsibility placed on him. Much like the prevalent group of black superheroes whose only defining trait is their blackness

I also thought it was interesting that in episode one the show made us assume that the father was abusive. but later revealed in episode 3 that the mum was kinda a lady Macbeth.

I believe mainly his mom recognizes that they have fears implanted in them by racial politics and systemic racism due to living in America. I think that specific fear imparted by racism that she wants to not let get to Jon. So yea she has prepare him so no fear touches him especially that racial fear which I think is harder to combat bc it's racism is so deeply rooted in America. I think the episode does an interesting commentary on how racism really warps and distorts the views of black people in ways that make them raise their children in the ways you are pointing out

As a black (congolese) french, my mom was nooooot that extra but she was definitely like John mom and when John say something about still loving his parents even after what he went through. I RELATE SOOO BAD this weirdly true because you grew up and "kind of" understand why 🤷🏾♀️

I loved that we got the mother's perspective and a mother that is pushing her son and this lifestyle. too often the mother is a side character in these stories lacking agency and just a passenger along for the ride. to my own personal reading the William Tell scene at the end with the mother ends with John accepting the lifestyle and becoming a willing participant himself and his parents starting to accept him for who he is and make room for him in their plans for his life. ultimately it's his mother's choice to enroll him that leads him down the path to being a viable candidate for the ring. it's not the fearlessness, it's not his willingness to put an objective above his own personal wellbeing, it's his creativity and imagination that makes him viable.

I often think about this as what I call race blindness. The examples you give haven’t been seen or even aknowledged by many non black americans. Similar to the way they simply don’t recognize black people in person. Introducing black stories in places where they weren’t prepared forces that aknowledgement, the discomfort of this causes big reactions by people who can’t metabolize that discomfort.

I think that John will actually have to break away from his parents’ programming before the ring chooses him.

Great analysis! I also think it’s great that John was chosen when he went against his parents, which showed the willpower that the guardians were looking for

I think he still had choices at some point in his life, and I think it didn't make him resent his parents. When he was told the reason why by 5 and he chose to go on. When his mother told him that they couldn't contact the Guardians and he still chose to go on and when he was discharged from the military and then he pivots to art.
But for me, I think maybe part of him loves to be a green lantern, but weirdly, all that made him continue was still the love of his parents. Not approval.
