Kai basically has no sense of self-worth as a person. His sense of worth used to revolve around protecting his sister, then around his element and protecting people, and after the Merge, it shifted toward his family itself. While Zane is afraid of losing his worth as a human being and is trying to understand the concept of humanity and hold on to it, Kai is almost the opposite. He tries to prove his worth through achievements, or by putting others before himself—like sacrificing himself or blaming himself for things. That may be because his sense of self-worth disappeared, and it could have started after losing his parents when he was five years old. And even in Season 0, the show gave us another indication of this mindset. When Wu saved Kai by sacrificing himself to save his weapon, Kai thought Wu had died and said that Wu shouldn't have disappeared—that he should have been the one to disappear instead

Let’s not forget that Kai has grown from being egotistical to trying being a good brother and an example to his family and when he had the choice to make to save the Blade or Lloyd the reason he was struggling to choose for being a great hero or being a real brother for Lloyd
