@rivenvox1: In 1901... divers exploring an ancient shipwreck near a Greek island found something strange. Buried beneath the remains of statues and pottery... was a small, heavily corroded lump of bronze. At first... it looked completely worthless. Just another piece of wreckage. But when researchers began cleaning it... they noticed something impossible. Gears. Tiny... precisely cut... interlocking gears. And there weren't just one or two. There were dozens. Slowly, the bronze fragments revealed something that shouldn't have been inside an ancient shipwreck. A machine. But not just any machine. Its complex system of gears could calculate the movements of celestial bodies... track the Moon... predict astronomical cycles... and even model events in the sky. It was more than 2,000 years old. Yet in many ways... it functioned like an ancient analog computer. The device became known as the Antikythera Mechanism. But that discovery created an even bigger mystery. How could ancient craftsmen build something this complicated... and then seemingly disappear from history? For centuries afterward... nothing remotely similar survived. No machines. No technology. Almost nothing. It was as if the knowledge required to build it... had simply vanished. Then researchers discovered inscriptions covering its fragments... almost like instructions... or a manual... left behind by the people who created it. But the biggest mystery remains. If this machine survived by accident... what else was built that didn't? #antikythera #ancienthistory #mystery #ancienttechnology #history
