@saint: Evangelion is the pinnacle of visual references and we didn’t even notice. The show doesn’t really explain its style, but the creators basically sampled all of human history to build it. They pulled directly from Van Gogh’s paintings and Joan Miró’s surrealism for the backgrounds. They used scenes from classic sci-fi movies for the shots, and mashed up old Christian and Jewish mysticism to make the angels feel so alien. It’s wild how much history is buried in this show.

the painting in the last slide is an ai generated, van gogh never drew sunflower fields, only the sunflower series. this is the actual van Gogh painting the show was referencing, painted in 1888, it is also the painting that got covered in tomato soup in 2022 in london
