What you’re saying is all very well, but surely it depends on the company one finds oneself in? Not everyone comes into contact with "civilized" or refined people. So, the etiquette you prescribe is likely intended only for the upper class. I appreciate etiquette, but I would make a fool of myself if I applied it with people who speak a different kind of language—by which I mean simpler, more down-to-earth speech. Fortunately, I am comfortable navigating all kinds of social settings, and that feels great! In my opinion, someone who can only communicate at a high level—strictly adhering to etiquette—is not a strong communicator, but a weak one! Long live only etiquette, right?
