This doesn’t apply to me and my parents. I’ve taken my parents in. I loved my parents and took care of them both with my husband until my mom passed and still take care of my dad until it’s time for him to go. They’ve done everything they needed and wanted to do, went wherever they wanted to go. I cooked for them for years. Sometimes they cooked for me and my husband when we were running late from work. We’ve all gotten along so well. We always loved and respected one another. My world changed when I lost my mom but I still have my dad to love and care for.

I grew up with my paternal grandmother and later my maternal grandfather both living with our family. My parents never expected them to be babysitters or helpers around the house. We respected them and listened to their words of wisdom. I learned how to solve conflicts when there was one, how to compromise, that all elders should be respected and my parents never tried to control them. They always had their own lives and their friends were always welcomed at our house.I am grateful I grew up this way.💙

If you’re able to live independently, it makes no sense to move in with the kids.

There is absolutely no way that I would ever want to live with my children. I love living all by myself with my dog. I can’t imagine moving in with one of my kids. No.

I'm from Pakistan and my wife is American. we have been married for 40 years and we have a wonderful son who's is a doctor in Philadelphia. I have been staying in Pakistan for quite a while now. apart from some other reasons, I had to take care of my elderly parents. my sister, having her own family and home, left her home and moved in my parents house to take care of them. first my mother passed away and then my father passed away at the age of 93 last year. so, I'm going to go back to the USA to be with my little family. now what? when my son turned 18 he chose to be at the dorm in college. and then he had to move to Philadelphia due to medical school. my wife stayed in Pittsburgh while I in Pakistan. now my wife moved to Philadelphia too but, guess what, they have their own apartments and that shocked me. a child she raised with so much love and compassion and they are living separately. and then I realized it's the American way of life and when I go back my wife and I'll live separately. I'm trying very hard to get used to such a situation. flip part. a friend of mine, here in Pakistan. his sons got married. he got grand children. all under one roof. my friend and his wife were still the bosses. children, including adults, never dared to say anything disrespectful. he did whatever he liked. and then he got sick. and here is the catch. he was surrounded by his sons and grandchildren. all the time ready if their father or grandfather needed anything. when I would visit him, he would be like a king and everyone treated him like one. and then he got sick and in and out of hospital. and every time the kids were there for him. and if he had to stay in the hospital, someone would be their at the hospital with him. and a few months ago he passed away never alone or lonely. that's precisely what I did for my mother and father. I'm 71 years old. and I'm scared to death how my life would be in the USA. will our son be just visiting us? I really envy my friend's last year's of his life. so, I guess it's all a cultural thing.
