@st.michaels.tv: Catholic Reflection “Dropping drinks on the grave of the dead has no spiritual effect.” When a person dies, what matters is not the food or drink placed on the grave, but the state of the person’s soul before God. The Catholic faith teaches us to pray for the dead and entrust them to God’s mercy. A soul may be in Heaven, in Purgatory, or in Hell. A person who is already in Heaven has no need of the drink or food we pour on the grave. Those in Purgatory do not need drinks or material offerings; they need our prayers, Masses, sacrifices and works of charity offered for their souls. As for those who are in Hell, no earthly drink or offering can change their eternal state. Therefore, rather than pouring drinks on graves, let us honour our departed loved ones in a way that is meaningful to our Catholic faith: pray for them, have Masses offered for them, remember them with charity, and commend their souls to the mercy of God.
