One of the best parts of building a service-based business is that you don’t have to have everything figured out on day one. You learn. You adjust. You improve. Here are three changes I’m making in my business: 1. Service contracts. I want both my clients and me to know exactly what we’re agreeing to—from the scope of the project to who is responsible for disposing of discarded items. Clear expectations build trust. 2. Bidding by the job instead of by the hour (when it makes sense). Sometimes the value is in completing the project—not in how many hours it takes. If I can do the work efficiently, the client gets the same great result, and we both benefit. 3. Being more selective about clients. In the beginning, you may need to say yes more often as you build your business. But over time, you start to recognize who your ideal clients are and where your skills are the best fit. Referrals to someone with a different expertise can be the right answer for everyone. Building a business isn’t about getting everything perfect.
