When I was younger, I remember seeing job advertisements asking for ten, sometimes fifteen years of experience, and feeling a small irritation rise within me. Ten years? For what? Give me the manuals. Give me a few weeks with the systems. Put me beside someone who understands the work and teach me. I learn quickly. I will understand it. Perhaps, with enough determination, I might even do it better than the person who has been sitting there for ten years. That was the hot-blooded confidence of youth. And perhaps youth needs some of it. A young man must believe mountains are climbable before he has learnt how high they really are. But somewhere along the years, the argument began to quieten. I understand now why some positions ask not merely for knowledge, but for experience. Knowledge can sometimes be transferred in an afternoon. Experience cannot. There are professions where knowledge will take you very far. There are others where knowledge may get you through the door, but only years can teach you how to remain in the room. A surgeon may know the anatomy perfectly, but there are things the hands of an older surgeon have encountered that no diagram can contain. A lawyer may know the law, but after thirty years he has also learned something about judges, people, silence, timing, pride, fear, settlements, and the strange distance that sometimes exists between being legally right and being wise. A priest may know his theology, but the old priest has buried children. He has stood beside marriages as they began and watched some of them fracture. He has heard confessions that would rearrange another man's understanding of human nature. He has prayed beside hospital beds where medicine had reached its boundary. He has watched men who once mocked God eventually ask for Him. So now, when I meet an old priest, I pause. I no longer hurry to measure the speed of his speech or wonder why it takes him so long to arrive at a point. And when I stand beside an older mechanic who seems to be taking too long with something I believe I could diagnose quickly, I have learned to restrain the impatience in me. Perhaps he is not slow. Perhaps he has heard that sound before. Perhaps twenty years ago another engine made almost the same sound, and everyone changed the obvious part, only to discover three days later that the problem was somewhere else entirely. Experience sometimes looks like hesitation to the inexperienced.
