ARE GHANAIAN TEACHERS “STUPID” FOR CONTINUALLY FIGHTING FOR WHAT THEY DESERVE? 🇬🇭🍎 A teacher recently made a provocative point: “Instead of continually demonstrating for your salary and conditions, why not leave the classroom and find something else?” He says he left teaching and now works as an Okada rider. But I think the conversation is much bigger than that. Ghanaian teachers have legitimate reasons to be frustrated. In 2026 alone, teacher groups have raised concerns about unpaid arrears, delayed promotion-related salary adjustments and conditions of service. Just recently, unions threatened industrial action over promotion and salary placement before suspending it following government assurances. And reports suggest some teachers and headteachers are even using their own salaries to support basic school operations. So perhaps the question shouldn’t be: “WHY DON’T THE TEACHERS JUST LEAVE?” Maybe we should ask: “WHAT HAPPENS TO A COUNTRY WHEN GOOD TEACHERS START DECIDING THAT LEAVING THE CLASSROOM IS THEIR BEST OPTION?” Because an education system cannot become stronger by continually losing capable teachers. At the same time, teachers are individuals with families, bills and ambitions. If teaching can no longer provide the life someone needs, I cannot tell that person they must remain indefinitely because teaching is a “calling.” Drive Okada. Start the business. Learn another profession. Build another income stream. Change careers if necessary. BUT THE COUNTRY SHOULD BE WORRIED WHEN LEAVING TEACHING BECOMES MORE ATTRACTIVE THAN REMAINING IN THE CLASSROOM. Ghana’s education challenges go beyond salaries too. Recent national research has highlighted continuing problems with teacher deployment and inequalities between schools and regions. So I wouldn’t call the teachers stupid. I WOULD QUESTION A SYSTEM THAT RISKS MAKING ITS TEACHERS FEEL STUPID FOR STAYING. 🇬🇭 You cannot continuously talk about transforming Ghanaian education while treating the people expected to deliver that transformation as an afterthought. IF THE CLASSROOM IS IMPORTANT, THE TEACHER MUST BE IMPORTANT TOO. #MindShift360 #GhanaEducation #GhanaTeachers #GhanaYouth #EducationGhana
