EPASA MOTO — THE SPIRIT OF MOUNT CAMEROON In Bakweri tradition, Mount Cameroon is not simply a volcano. The mountain is associated with Epasa Moto, a powerful spirit said to guard its fire, its forests and the people living on its slopes. Far below, in the sea, lives Liengu la Mwanja, the water spirit described in some traditions as his wife. When lava reaches the ocean, some elders do not describe it only as a volcanic event. They say Epasa Moto has gone down to meet her. In 1909, Mount Cameroon erupted while Buea was the capital of German Kamerun. Colonial officials temporarily moved their administration away from the town. Bakweri oral accounts connect the eruption with German road construction carried out without consulting the traditional authorities or respecting the mountain. Other oral testimonies associate later eruptions with the deaths of important Bakweri chiefs, notably in 1982 and 1999. These connections belong to local spiritual interpretation, not to volcanological science. Scientists explain the eruptions through magma, pressure and geological activity beneath the Cameroon Volcanic Line. Both readings are presented in this video without confusing them: geology explains how the volcano erupts; Bakweri tradition explains what the mountain means. Some historians also associate Mount Cameroon with the “Chariot of the Gods” described by the Carthaginian navigator Hanno in antiquity. The identification remains debated.
