@blackbirdcoop: Replying to @rvagirl farmers aren’t exactly “wealthy,” but not because of the “land-rich, cash-poor” stuff you hear from everybody. They are a very strange class of people, economically.
I live in a farming community and most of the farmers here are doing pretty good in that they own two million dollars in land and another million in equipment but the drive a 1996 Ford Ranger with 300k miles on it with no AC. Their tractor is worth more than their house but they were able to pay cash for it because they’ve never had a car or mortgage payment. They’re frugal yet balling at the same time. 😂

Marx described small farmers as petite bourgeois, basically they own stuff that generates wealth, but at such a small scale that they still get crushed by bigger groups.

I think its crazy with all the farmer hate. If there was one profession who deserves tax breaks or subs, youd think the ones WHO GROW YOUR FOOD would be one of the most deserving. The only alternative is going pro big AG which I thought was what they were against....

And that's why family farms are often sold to developers after the farmer family member passes away.

I live in Idaho first paralegal job was working for an attorney that does asset protection. We worked a lot with farmers that were sitting on millions of dollars in land but cash poor with the farm business. It’s because every year most of them take out loans buy their cattle or whatever for the year and then are in debt until they sell the heard or whatever they specialized in to pay off the debt. The issue is the debts could be tied to the land and if they don’t have a good year they could lose land. He would protect the real property so they could keep their investment if the business fails. Their is a lot more details to how most of them operated then this but they very much live in a we are rich but poor kind of life. I know more about farm finances and operations then I’ve ever cared for but it’s good info

my parents, grandparents, and great grand parents owned a small dairy farm. 70 acres of land in rural upstate NY. the land and such is probably worth a couple million if they parceled it out for development. but, when I was a kid, we didnt always have money for school lunch and my mom worked second shift at GE. so yeah, this video is accurate

Farmers are somehow in all of them and none of them at the same time. That's how I understand it.

That's probably the best analogy I've heard so far on the economic ladder, and where we all kind of stand on the rungs of it all, thanks!

My favorite argument when I someone says farmers make a lot of money is "no, farmers move a lot of money". Especially in the Midwest where its predominantly row crop farming.

Dr Horton ended up buying some of the family land. my great uncle who lived like a homeless person for 86 years ended up walking away with 6 million for some of the land. then almost a million in equipment. he still rents out some left

The world lost a great soul yesterday in Wendell Berry. Have you read much of his work, given so much of his prose was on the importance of small farmers?

I work in investments, and we have so many retired farmers who lease out their land now and just travel and invest and have fun with side hustles. It is not the retirement the rest of us "making it" have access to.

So farmers have been historically a problem for socialists because they aren't rich but they also already own their means of production and most socialists believe that food is a right but that means you would be exploiting farmers if food is provided to the population as a state service which would mean the farmers who own their land and produce their product would somehow have to be folded into the government but that also takes away the means of production from workers who already own the means of production. Like it was a problem for the USSR and China that ended up with mass starvation periods because they took the farms from the people who knew how to farm and gave them to people who don't and then wondered why they didn't have enough food.
