@travelwithnoon: Delta Air Lines exists because of a bug. In the 1890s the boll weevil crossed from Mexico and began destroying the cotton the South's whole economy ran on. Nothing on the ground could stop it, so in 1925 a Georgia company called Huff Daland Dusters went after it from the sky with eighteen biplanes nicknamed Puffers. Their chief entomologist, a bug scientist named C.E. Woolman, ended up buying the company with local investors in 1928 and renaming it for the farmland it served: the Mississippi Delta. Its first flight carried five passengers from Dallas to Jackson, Mississippi, in 1929. Today it's the largest airline in the world by revenue. And the little crop duster its own people rebuilt as a memorial to Woolman hangs in the Smithsonian. Send this to the person you'd fly anywhere with. Woolman joined the dusters in 1925 on leave from LSU's agricultural extension department. He never really left: he ran Delta until his death in 1966, 41 years later.

The name "Delta" was reportedly coined by Catherine FitzGerald, the company's office manager. A crop-dusting secretary in Monroe, Louisiana named what became the world's biggest airline.

That first 1929 route wasn't nonstop: Dallas to Jackson with stops in Shreveport and Monroe, the dusting company's hometown.
