@kayleebullen: Learning to acknowledge and minimize rumination is, in my opinion, one of the greatest skills we can learn to do. Here’s a little bit about rumination in 2 minutes. ✨ If you are located in California or Michigan and looking for a anxiety/OCD therapist, please complete a contact form via my website in the link in my bio. What about when it seeps in when you’re unconscious. It’s so bad sometimes it haunts me in my sleep and wakes me up by getting my brain active. I usually can’t fall back asleep after

I did cognitive behavioral therapy, learned these tools and use them consistently since. I’m proud of how good I am at redirecting now.

“The feeling like I’ve left business undone” is the worst and catapultes me into spirals, especially when I feel the urge to “confess” something due to my relationship OCD or moral scrupulosity OCD.

It’s because I’m mostly right of the things I worry about and I like to be prepared. And that really makes it hard to stop

How do you recommend redirecting your focus when rumination occurs at bedtime? I haven’t found a way to trick my brain into focusing on sleep

Is talking in circles during a conflict with a partner rumination if you feel like you need to keep going back to the same issue(s)?

Learning how to put a halt to rumination changed my life. I thought for so many years I had to give every thought its moment and try to solve whatever it was, and when I realized (through therapy) I wasn’t….game changer.

So can you help me understand the difference between, like you shared, focusing on something else and needing to sit with the uncertainty of the discomfort and thought (like riding the wave). Some research about OCD therapy says in order to overcome ruminations you might have to sit with that uncertainty and ride it out instead of avoiding or redirecting because then it will just come back bigger and louder. I guess how would you determine when to use these two approaches or are you saying to kind of combine the two with accepting the uncertainty of the thought and then redirecting your attention without problem solving. Sorry very wordy!

Thank you so much for sharing! Do you have any recommendations for books/resources that dive deeper into this topic? I’m a newly licensed counselor and would love to study this more!
