A couple of uni students came up with the joke in 1993 or 1994 and ist just spread like wildfire ever since. At one point the mayor of Bielefeld said that the city would pay 1 million € to anyone that could prove Bielefeld doesn't exist

I don't know if this is the true explanation or just the urban legend I've heard but as far as I remeber it went like this: Google Maps went online and of course everyone looked up their hometown but Bielefeld couldn't be found. And that's how it spread and became a running gag. But as I said: I wanna stress that I don't know if this is true.
