Did you know that Chief Olusegun Obasanjo is not the first Nigerian to move from prison to the presidency? The only difference between him and Nwafor Orizu is that while he became the President, Orizu moved to become a Senator, then Senate President and further to Nigeria's acting President. Orizu, a prominent nationalist and politician from Nnewi, was conv!cted in 1953 in connection with allegat!ons involving funds collected through the American Council on African Education, an organisation involved in supporting African students studying abroad. According to reports, a magistrate conv!cted him on seven counts of frãud and thēft involving £32,000 intended for student scholarships. Then, he was handed a jail of seven years. WHY WAS NWAFOR ORIZU GRANTED A FREE PARDON? On this day, August 30, 1960, just 32 days before Nigeria gained independence, an important but often forgotten event took place: Nwafor Orizu was granted a Free Pardon. His conv!ction had become contrøversial. You know why? Many Nigerians never believed that he actually committed the cr!me. Some others argued that it was all a setup. It was believed that he was being persēcuted for his nationalist activities and oppøsition to the colonial government. Support for him began to swell. As Nigeria moved rapidly toward independence, Orizu, who had gained freedom, returned to the political arena and became an important figure in the emerging Nigerian political establishment. Without much options available, the colonial authorities granted him a Free Pardon, effectively removing the consequences of his conv!ction as his support base increased. And history would later show just how significant that decision to pardon him was. Nwafor Orizu went on to become President of the Nigerian Senate in 1964. Historical reports also said Orizu was also Acting President of Nigeria from late October 1965 when President Nnamdi Azikiwe went on medical leave abroad. He remained in the position until January 1966 when the first cøup ushered in the military junta. It is on record that it was Orizu that formally transferred power to Major-General Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi. So, when we remember Nigeria's journey to independence, the story of Nwafor Orizu reminds us that our history is filled with people whose lives passed through contrøversy, imprisønment, political struggle and ultimately national leadership. Replying to @Kikicke 🏳️‍🌈 I honestly never realized how much she took from other cultures. I was listening to Madonna when I was much younger and before a lot of these issues were at the forefront so I kind of looked past them and then once you brought it up and I looked into it I was like- this is so much deeper than I thought. Madonna has used various cultures religion and even the LGBTQ+++ to profit off of. I’m not really sure what is she’s doing now but it feels wrong but she’s definitely up there with the others like Lana Del Rey, Gwen Stefani, and Cher #nativetiktok #nativeamerican #nativefamily
