Did I get you?! 😂😂 I really wanted to make this video to emphasise that while my page is all about helping people to shop with awareness and making clever swaps to reduce ultra processed foods, I hope my message comes across that I believe in an 80:20 approach - in other words it’s what we do MOST of the time that moves the needle! If you have my book you’ll see this message in big and bold in the book! Halloween is one day of the year and the spirit of it is about SO MUCH MORE than the sweets. So Yes I do bring my kids trick or treating and I don’t restrict the sweets they get in their bag that night (more like sack these days!!), we embrace the magic and excitement of that one day because I can see with my kids that it’s not actually about all the treats - it’s about the fun of getting dressed up in their favourite characters, the novelty of being out with friends in the dark, the excitement of knocking on strangers doors and not knowing what they’re going to get, and what I truly see which is one of the most important parts of being a healthy human - the CONNECTION that Halloween night brings. Meeting and walking alongside other kids on the streets, chatting to grown ups at their front doors who are SO kind and generous to the kids, looking at the amazing decorations on the houses, laughing together at grown ups being dressed up, it’s experiencing community in the most fun way ❤️ Things we WILL do on Halloween are: 🍏 During the day we’ll do the old school games with family of apple bobbing etc and I’ll serve fun Halloween fruit/nut snacks for that so that they don’t have sugar meltdowns before we even get out trick or treating! 🍴We will have a good dinner that I know they’ll eat before we go trick or treating - getting in some protein & fibre before all the sweets makes a big difference to how the kids respond to the sugar! 💦 I’ll bring water for them to drink as we go around trick or treating which also helps 🧙‍♀️ After they’ve enjoyed the novelty of their stash that night we’ll offer to swap the extras for a toy the next day - some call this the “switch witch” and last year it worked great for us 🙌 Let me know what you think 🎃
