I don't know where you learned that -8 is legally blind, but thats not true. Legally blind means that *****with your best pair of glasses***** that you see 20/200 (or 400 depending who you ask). Ive had patients with a -20 rx and they still weren't Legally blind.

Count your blessings man. Any time you go to any doctor and the exam is boring, you’re blessed. You don’t want to walk into your eye doctor’s office and have to discover the other side of what they do. Granted you’re nearsighted, but if that’s the least of your sight issues, be glad your sight is still able to be corrected and you can see.

You’re very young so I’m sure you don’t understand this, it may appear that’s all they do while YOU’RE in the exam chair, but they see patients of all ages with MANY eye diseases and emergencies.

That’s not all we do at all, it’s 8 years of school to be able to manage complex ocular disease and even diagnose systemic conditions like autoimmune disorders, brain tumors, etc. Only 5% of my day is “one or two”. Take care :)

It’s a lot of that - but it’s also telling patients they may go blind one day. Educating patients about how their systemic health can affect their eyes. Managing diabetes care, even diagnosing brain tumors or cancer. Most of it is easygoing happy, but some days are rough delivering bad news.

That just means you’re healthy lol. When I go to my pcp their assistant weighs me checks my BP and the doc comes in and asks me questions and says my nurse will come draw blood. I would never presume that’s all my PCP does lol

“Legally blind” is a term given to people who cannot see a certain level of acuity even with correction (glasses or CLs) on. Even -8.00 people are not legally blind if they can see well enough with their glasses on.

The definition of Legally blind is the vision can’t be corrected ❗️So if your vision in worse than 20/200 and updated glasses or contacts don’t improve your vision then you are legally blind ❗️an ophthalmologist an optometrist are different!

The ophthalmologists I work for do not do glasses prescriptions. They do surgery. And there’s more to it than that though. Lol.

the refraction is the lamest part of my day. I dig metal and rust out of corneas, treat glaucoma with lasers, clear up cataract scar tissue with lasers, diagnose diabetes and hypertension...I've diagnosed MS, stroke, myasthenia gravis... you are lucky that the "1 or 2" part of our training is the only part you have needed. be grateful!
