I had a therapist but me through a whole course of DBT to improve my “distress tolerance”. I have been through a lot of emotional trauma and turns out I was in a relationship with an emotionally abusive person. The slow motion intense gaslighting of that whole experience took me years, YEARS to reverse.

I need a syllabus of all the skills that emotionally neglected people need. Like a school. Here is the skills gap; here is the way to build that skill.

lol try having a family full of councillors who try to tell you to regulate yourself and won’t engage with you until you’ve “regulated” = stopped having visible signs of a negative emotion - and you’re 6

This is how clients like me slip through the cracks because we are told we are doing great, and we know all the steps of what to do, but still remain disregulated, then when we fall apart we are told we are not applying the skills and then we are told we are being treatment resistant. When in reality is we need someone to help us co-regulate and feel the feels

I automatically overregulate so now that I’m consistently safe I can’t finish the process of feeling the stress that I’ve lived with for so long. Like I can’t physically process anything because I just turn it off because it was dangerous for so long

I have experienced this in therapy, I have had therapists misused the concept of regulation. they made me believe that regulation was not expressing my emotions, so when my emotion started coming back once I felt safe to express them, I thought there was something wrong with me... because they were giving me the same message as the people who had abused me and forced me to shut down all of my emotional responses in the first place... I then found a therapist who really did understand emotional regulation, and she understood that I needed to let them out in order to learn how to manage them and cope with them, she understood that I needed to feel safe to express my emotions. now I recognise that regulation isn't the absence of emotional expression, but it is the tolerance for that emotion and remaining in your window of tolerance whilst experiencing those emotions.

Yeah, I understood your original video and think there was nothing wrong with the wording. I’ve been invalidated by therapists multiple times, usually because they are using CBT to brush away emotions that I just want to be acknowledged.

I’m working on research into how the media has portrayed stress and stress management since the 1950s. This type of harmful emotional “regulation” has been built in since 1956, sadly.

I agree that term works for it’s purpose of communicating an idea about mental health. Anyway, People like myself, struggle to not only know their own feelings but when we do express feelings people react strongly to us - probably because it is unusual for us to react. We get negative feedback for showing feelings or having a need and that causes us to over regulate again. Except now I’m in the throes perimenopause/menopause and I’m finding the ability to mask and regulate very taxing. So I isolate because I’m getting negative feedback which reinforces the I can’t have feelings or needs or express them…better be alone then. 🤷‍♀️

To add to that last bit…if you are NOT one of these people, it’s probably hard for you to fully understand but for those of us this actually applies to, this feels spot on. Thanks again for seeing us 🙏🏼

Thanks for this. I feel like every Tom, Dick, and harry of HCW are on this trip about emotional regulation now and think it is the solution to everything. I had my LTC assessor go off about emotional regulation being amazing when she was uncomfortable bc I started crying. Not to mention the appropriate of therapyspeak in society so now everyone uses it to say don’t overreact or you’re being dramatic. There is a serious discouragement from experiencing emotions.
