I’m speaking from experience. I was in a toxic relationship for 9 years, almost 10. I loved that girl with every part of me, but the toxicity, beatings and constant fighting became too much. There were times I was beaten until I fainted and woke up in hospital.
One day I had to sit myself down and say, “Kelly, one day they will kill you. If you don’t leave now, your family might receive your body in a body bag.” That was the moment I knew I had to choose my life over the relationship.
Leaving wasn’t easy. I loved her, but I left. And today I’m in a completely different relationship. There’s no fighting or putting hands on each other. When we have disagreements, we sit down and talk. Sometimes, because I was so used to toxicity, I even mistake my partner’s quietness for anger or think I’ve done something wrong. But that’s just who she is—she’s calm, she loves me, and she chooses communication over violence.
Please, if you’re in a toxic or abusive relationship, don’t wait until it’s too late. Love is not supposed to cost you your life. Choose yourself. Leave if you can, seek help, and protect your life. It’s better to walk away than for your family to receive you in a body bag. ❤️
